Development Officer

Position Summary 

Climate Emergency Fund seeks a Development Officer. This role is critical to our small but mighty development team, with opportunities to help our organization grow, and most importantly, the chance to support the climate movement. Reporting to the Development Director, this position supports major elements of our fundraising program. This position is approximately 70% behind the scenes – keeping our program organized and running smoothly, and 30% involving direct funder outreach and stewardship of existing donors.

The development officer will have a designated portfolio of donors in the $1,000 to $50,000 range to cultivate. 

This critical role requires someone whose experience and capabilities have prepared them to: 

  • Perform executive-level, detail-oriented administrative tasks, making sound independent decisions; 

  • Perform routine and ad hoc requests promptly and effectively, maintaining a high level of accuracy and precision;

  • Have excellent people skills to effectively communicate and collaborate both with high-level donors, fellow staff, and board members.

Climate Emergency Fund is quickly growing. We seek someone who is positive under tight deadlines, flexible, and a great team player. 

The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $92,000, dependent on experience. We offer a benefits package and work-from-home stipend. This US-based position will be remote with the expectation of availability for possible travel 2-3 times a year.

Responsibilities will include:

Support All Aspects of Fundraising Operations: 

  • Conduct donor research, gathering data for donor cultivation.

  • Prepare meeting material for the development team and clients. 

  • Draft and edit donor communications. 

  • Execute emails to constituents via MailChimp or Raiser's Edge NXT.

  • Assist with planning events and special projects. If the candidate is based in Los Angeles, Bay Area or New York, occasional in-person support for events in the area may be needed.

  • Support the development operations manager with donation processing, including data management, and the monthly reconciliation process. 

  • Work with the development operations manager to ensure every donor receives prompt and appropriate thank-yous and other correspondence.

  • Assist in maintaining our donor database.

Direct Donor Outreach: 

  • Regularly communicate with and meet with assigned donors or prospects in the $1,000- $50,000 giving range. 

  • Prepare material and emails or other correspondence for select donors and prospects.

  • Assist in direct mail marketing and other donor communications as needed.

Support Development Director:

  • Assist with tracking Development Director’s priorities and action items.

  • Assist with Development Director’s meetings: preparation, attendance, note taking, and coordination of follow-up/action items.

  • General support as needed including responding to urgent requests.

Qualifications:

  • A strong alignment with the values and mission of Climate Emergency Fund with a deep value for non-violent disruptive action as the quickest path to change. 

  • While this position is remote, ideal candidates will be based in or around a major U.S. metropolitan area on the East or West coast with preference for San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York. 

  • 3+ years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, including a track record of successful donor stewardship and engagement.

  • Experience with in-person and virtual event planning and execution.

  • Prior experience with donor databases and online fundraising preferred, especially Raiser's Edge.

  • BA/BS degree preferred, but not required. We appreciate that academic achievement is only one indicator of ability, and value professional experience in hiring for this position.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including editing skills.  

  • Tech savviness is a must for this remote position:

    • Mastery of Google Workspace: Gmail, Google docs, Google Calendar, and Google Drive.

    • Strong skills in spreadsheets: Google Sheets and Excel.

    • Ability to learn and master new software quickly. Knowledge of Asana, Zoom, and Raiser's Edge are a plus. 

  • A great teammate and collaborator who is helpful, flexible, respectful, and positive, even under pressure. 

  • Detail oriented: excellent at data-entry and record-keeping, transferring data from multiple sources accurately and consistently.

  • Highly organized with the ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects and switch easily between tasks.

  • Able to work well independently so judgment and the ability to make sound decisions without supervision.

  • Trustworthy and experienced at handling confidential information.
